What is ISO 42001?
ISO 42001 is the first international standard for managing AI responsibly. Published in 2023, it allows organizations to demonstrate responsible AI governance by achieving certification through an accredited body.
The standard requires organizations to establish an Artificial Intelligence Management System – a set of policies, technical and procedural controls, responsibilities, risk processes and monitoring activities designed to govern how they develop, deploy and use AI.
ISO 42001 covers areas like risk assessment, accountability, transparency, data management, human oversight, security, monitoring and continual improvement.
What to Expect from an ISO42001 Service
Our ISO 42001 consulting service is carried out in three key areas to help your organization prepare for certification:
Gap Analysis and Readiness Assessment
Our experts assess your current AI governance, policies and processes against ISO 42001 requirements. We then map gaps, risks and areas for improvement, creating a clear roadmap to becoming certified.
AI Management System Implementation
Bridewell can help you design and implement an effective AIMS aligned with ISO 42001. We begin with AI Risk and Impact Assessments to identify key risks, potential impacts and required actions. These findings then inform the wider governance, policies, roles, controls and risk management processes needed to support responsible AI use.
Internal Audit and Certification Support
We also review the effectiveness of your AIMS through internal audits – identifying areas that require improvement before certification. We support remediation, management review and certification preparation.

How it Works
Our approach with ISO 42001 begins by understanding the context and goals of your organization.
We then break down the more complex aspects of the standard into a clear and concise four-phase delivery model, making the process as simple as possible.
- Step One: Gap Analysis – Our consultants will conduct interviews with key stakeholders to understand how your company uses AI, its current AI management policy and its impact on your organization.
- Step Two: AI and Impact Assessment – We’ll conduct a full assessment of the noticeable risks to your AI operations, including potential disruptions and breaches.
- Step Three: Implementation – We’ll help you implement the required AI management controls, policies and processes, addressing identified gaps and embedding ISO 42001 requirements across your organization.
- Step Four: Internal Audit – Our consultants will review your AI management system against ISO 42001 requirements, identifying any remaining issues and helping ensure you’re ready for certification.
- Step Five: External Certification Support - We’ll support you throughout the external certification process, helping you prepare for the assessment, respond to auditor queries and address any non-conformities identified.

ISO42001 FAQs
ISO 42001 certification is relevant for any organization that develops, provides, procures or uses AI systems and wants an auditable way to govern the risks associated with them.
Organizations that typically require ISO 42001 certification include any business that uses AI in decision-making or handling sensitive information, supplies AI services to customers, develops AI products or services or simply needs stronger governance around AI tools amid increasing industry regulations.
ISO 42001 and ISO 27001 are distinct standards. ISO 42001 focuses on the responsible governance of AI through an AIMS, while ISO 27001 focuses on protecting information through an Information Security Management System (ISMS).
ISO 27001 addresses broader risks like data breaches, cyber threats and access control, while ISO 42001 covers AI-specific risks such as bias, unexplained decision-making and lack of human oversight.
Both certifications are recommended to strengthen the overall security posture, and can be implemented together through an integrated management system (IMS).
