The Importance of Risk Management

Most organisations realise the importance of cyber security risk management but often discover the task is more complex and time-consuming than first anticipated.

  • Interconnected Systems Larger organisations with extensive, interconnected systems find it harder to identify risks and how to mitigate them without impacting business operations.

  • Understanding Risk Ensuring a fully integrated risk management function requires a clear understanding of interactions and dependencies across the business and their potential impacts.

  • Resourcing Challenges In-house teams are often tasked with too many priorities to fully dedicate themselves to risk management, leaving little resource for this essential activity.

How our Risk Management service works

Digital Waves

Our risk management service encompasses all types of risk from security standards and policy, security controls information, security management system, to physical security.

  • Step one: Our consultants perform an initial high-level assessment to identify potential risks within your organisation and where they fall short of industry frameworks or proprietary policies and standards.
  • Step two: Depending on findings from the initial assessment, our consultants may advise whether any of your organisation’s third-party providers need a more in-depth, on-site visit and review.
  • Step three: Having conducted a complete assessment, we then outline and implement an risk management process that addresses any identified risks or vulnerabilities to ensure they are mitigated and compliant.
  • Step four: If required, our consultants can be utilised on an ongoing basis to augment your team and ensure this risk management process is adhered to on a continuous basis.

Bridewell Enhances Quantios's Security Credentials Through Close Partnership

“Bridewell have listened to what our business does, what our needs are and understands what we’re trying to solve,” says Sefton Jenkins. “They provide wraparound care to help us meet our objectives. For them it’s not just about executing penetration testing – we benefit from deep, ongoing engagement around all of our software security and internal practices.”
Sefton Jenkins
Quantios has been serving the wealth management market for over 30 years and has more than 450 customers in over 30 countries. A world-leading software provider, Quantios builds and manages integrated software to digitise corporate services, trust and fund administrators, and the company’s customers range from smaller independent organisations with a single office to some of the world’s largest organisations with multiple global offices.

The Challenge

Serving organisations in the trust, fund and corporate services sectors, Quantios's customers operate in a fast-changing environment in which there is a continually growing focus on security and regulation. Additionally, these organisations’ clients range from high net-worth individuals to corporations and trust funds. As such, the provision of highly personalised and private services means ultra-robust security is a basic expectation for the types of clients they serve.

High customer expectations and increasing regulation have driven consolidation and modernisation of services across the industry which is where Quantios’s integrated software and wealth management solutions come into play. “The industry has been ripe for modernisation and underserved by technology” says Joe Sefton Jenkins, Global Head of Technology & Development at Quantios . Its solutions, such as its NavOne and 5Series trust and fund administration platforms drive efficiency and automation for these organizations.

In order to first engage with and then retain clients, Quantios must be able to demonstrate the most robust levels of security possible within its products. Quantios’s own software and internal practices need to undergo serious scrutiny to ensure the levels of security expected by its clients can be continually met.

The Solution

TrustQuay set out to find a security and risk assurance partner that it could build a long term relationship with, that could provide ongoing support and consultancy around the security of its software and internal practices. The right partner would need to be at the forefront of information security and able to provide expertise and guidance on the latest security issues as they develop.

The Results

As security concern has grown globally in recent times, so did interest in the issue from Quantios’s customer base, particularly in what work was being carried out around product security. Bridewell has worked with Quantios through events and webinars that educate and inform the customer base around the threats that they’re exposed to and what Quantios do to mitigate those threats.

“We now get regular requests from customers asking us to share details of our security practices and results of penetration testing,” says Sefton Jenkins. “Working with Bridewell has helped to instil customers and ourselves with the confidence that we’re building our applications securely.”

The partnership has also helped Quantios to raise internal awareness of security practices. For Sefton Jenkins, this is an absolutely critical benefit. “The depth of expertise from Bridewell has helped my team think about the security risks of the things they’re working on in a much more astute way.”

“Having a partner like Bridewell standing shoulder to shoulder with us not only enhances our credibility but helps our customer base understand the necessary levels of investment to improve their practices through our services.”

Quantios continues to demonstrate its commitment to cyber security and protecting its customers and are also working with Bridewell on implementing an Information Security Management System in preparation for ISO27001 certification.

Quantios chose to partner with Bridewell based on the depth of its expertise and the strength of the work it does with government and large financial institutions. To test the security resilience of Quantios’s products, Bridewell regularly performs penetration testing on the software and reports back the results with insights into where and how any improvements can be made.

Risk Management FAQs

Cyber security risk management is the process of identifying, assessing, and responding to risks posed by cyber threats. The goal of cyber security risk management is to protect organisational assets and information. This includes protecting systems and networks from malware and other malicious software, as well as ensuring that data is not lost or corrupted. In addition, cyber security risk management also seeks to prevent disruptions to business operations and to ensure the continuity of critical services.

This will be detailed in the scope of work and depend on the required deliverables and outcomes, but often includes access documentation and to the relevant teams and stakeholders within the organisation. This helps to refine the risk management process, understanding, roles and responsibilities and treatment plans. Access to information about systems in scope or any existing risk material – such as reports or assessments will help inform the engagement.

The length of the engagement varies depending on the scope, current maturity and requirements. Some clients require days of advice and guidance, others prefer to utilise Bridewell for more in depth analysis, or to reduce the demand on their own resources on a temporary or long term basis.

Risk management is an ongoing process and Bridewell share knowledge, best practices and examples with clients to support organisations to mature and continue risk management practices independently.

Ideally an organisation will have an asset inventory, existing risk assessment and risk management processes and a previous risk assessment. We appreciate that organisations operate at different levels of maturity and that not all items might be available or complete.

Allocation of resources internally to support the engagement and risk management process is beneficial, often with communication to the business on the importance of risk management and what is required from staff and teams to support the initiative, along with the organisations reasons for focusing on risk management (e.g to support an ISO 27001 implementation or new business opportunity).

Some of the top cyber security risks include phishing attacks, ransomware, insider threats, advanced persistent threats (APTs) and unpatched software vulnerabilities.

Cyber security focuses on protecting systems, networks and data from cyber threats through measures like firewalls and encryption. Cyber risk management is a strategy within cyber security that involves identifying, assessing and prioritising risks to mitigate potential impacts.

A cyber security risk management plan is a structured approach to identifying, assessing and prioritising cyber security risks. It outlines strategies for mitigating or treating risks that include policies, procedures and controls. The plan also includes monitoring and reviewing approaches to new threats to maintain the ongoing protection of vital information.

To identify a cyber security risk, it’s important to conduct a structured risk assessment that will help identify, analyse and evaluate any potential threats to information centres. Some methods include cataloguing all data and hardware assets, identifying potential vulnerabilities, and determining threat likelihood.

Risk levels in cyber security range from low risk, which may have a minor impact on your organisation, through medium and high impact levels, to critical levels, which represent immediate and catastrophic damage to your organisation. Risk factors are determined by assessing the severity of impact, how easily they’re exploited, how widespread they are, and how easily they can be identified.
